The 24th Udaka Seiran Noh Performance
Yesterday, the 24th Udaka Seiran Noh Performance was held at the Kongo Noh Theatre in Kyoto.
This performance was held in memory of my late father, Udaka Michishige, commemorating the seventh anniversary of his passing. My younger brother, Norishige, performed the mai-bayashi “Yuya,” and I performed the Noh play Yamanba.
The Noh mask I used for the second half of Yamanba was made especially for this performance by my elder sister, Keiko. It is a reproduction of a Yamanba mask said to have been carved by the renowned artist and tea master Hon’ami Kōetsu.
In the theatre lobby, we exhibited photographs of my father performing, together with the Noh masks he used on those occasions. We also introduced his life and career, as well as stories and memories shared by some of his students.
Through a fortunate connection, we were also able to borrow and display a hanging scroll featuring the lyrics of Yamanba, written by Masuda Don’ō, who was once the owner of the original Kōetsu Yamanba mask.
Many people who had known and been connected with my father, as well as those who came to know about him through this occasion, joined us for the performance. I believe my father would have been very happy to see so many people gathered together in his memory.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported and contributed to this performance.
