能を観る

Watchng Noh

能は遥か700年に渡る伝承の中で時流に合わせ、少しずつ変容してきた芸能です。

しかし、この世界には昔も今も変わらない普遍的な物事が存在します。

人間はなぜ生まれ、死ぬのか。

目の前の美しい景色は何の為に存在するのか。

心に湧き上がる思いを一体どうすれば良いのか。

人間はずっとこんな事を考え、それぞれの人生を歩んできました。
能のメインテーマはそんな“人間の普遍性”であると言えるでしょう。

そして“人間の普遍性”は一人一人の時代や年齢、国籍や生い立ち、または性別などを通して多様な個性を生み出します。

能の中には人間・神様・仏様・精霊・鬼・幽霊など、様々な個性を持った人物が登場し、主人公を取り巻く物語は仮面・装束・音楽・舞・和歌・漢詩・信仰・哲学などの要素を織り交ぜて表現されます。

物語の中の登場人物も、それを観る人々もそれぞれ、他でもない自分自身の人生を過ごしていますので、舞台と見所(客席)の時間と時間、世界と世界が今まさに起こる出来事として鮮やかに交差します。これが能が描き出す“一期一会”の瞬間です。

能に魅了された人々は短い人生の中で、いにしえに思いを馳せ、今という時間を実感し、まだ見ぬ未来に心を躍らせてきました。

能は言わば“中世から使われているタイムマシーン”なのです。

Noh is a performing art that has gradually changed its form with the times as it has been passed down from generation to generation over the past 700 years.

Meanwhile, some things in this world are universal throughout the ages. Why are we born, and why do we die? What does this amazing view in front of me exist for? What am I supposed to do with this feeling growing inside me? People have continuously thought about these questions as they lived their lives. The main theme of Noh could be said to be "human universality."

This "universal nature of human beings" creates diverse individuality depending on the period in which each person lives, their age, nationality, upbringing, or gender.

Noh depicts a wide variety of characters, from living and dead people to Shinto and Buddhist deities, spiritual beings, and demons. Stories of the protagonists are interwoven with themes from religion, philosophy, and Japanese and Chinese poetry, and expressed through masks, costumes, music, and dance.

During a Noh play, the characters and the audience live in different times and places. Yet, as the story unfolds, the time and world on stage merges with that of those in their seats, giving the audience a vivid experience of being immersed in the story as they watch it. These moments are the unique experience that Noh provides.

People who get lost in the stories of Noh direct their thoughts to the distant past while realizing that they are living in the present and feeling excited about the future that awaits them.

Although the lifespan of each person is short, Noh is a “time machine” that has enabled us to travel through the centuries, since the medieval period.

金剛流Kongo School

金剛流とは What is the Kongo School?

能楽の主役を勤める役者・シテ方は現在5つの流儀に分かれています。その中で金剛流は古くは奈良の法隆寺に奉仕した猿楽座・坂戸座が源流で、室町時代初期には春日大社・興福寺に勤仕する大和猿楽四座の一つになりました。後に金剛座と呼ばれる様になり現在の金剛流へと至ります。

現在では京都が本拠地となり、シテ方五流の中で唯一関西に宗家の在住する流儀でもあります。

その芸風は「舞金剛(まいこんごう)」と言われ、豪快な動きと華麗・優美さを兼ね備えた舞に特徴があります。また「面金剛(おもてこんごう)」とも言われ、所蔵する能面に名品が多い事でも知られています。

The Kongo School has its roots in the Sakato-za, a troupe of actors who started to serve Horyuji Temple in the Kamakura period (1185–1333) by performing sarugaku, the original form of Noh. In the early Muromachi period (1336–1573), Sakato-za became famous as one of the four prestigious troupes in Yamato Province (present-day Nara) that served Kasuga Taisha Shrine and Kofukuji Temple. Later, Sakato-za became known as the Kongo-za, the forerunner of the Kongo School.

Now based in Kyoto, the Kongo School is the only one of the five schools of Noh shite-kata (principal) actors whose head family lives in the Kansai region.

The Kongo School is well known for its dynamic but elegant and graceful dance style and an extensive collection of masterpiece Noh masks. Over the years, come to be known as Mai-Kongo (dance-Kongo) and Omote-Kongo (mask-Kongo).

金剛能楽堂 The Kongo Nohgakudo

現在の金剛能楽堂は、菊水鉾町(四条室町)に百四十余年の星霜を経た旧金剛能楽堂から舞台をそのまま移築し、2003年に現在の京都御所の西側(烏丸中立売上ル)に開館しました。年に10回開催される金剛流の公演「金剛定期能」や新年の「謡初め」、「送り火能」や「能面能装束展」をはじめ、様々な能楽の公演が行われています。

The Kongo Nohgakudo theater now stands west of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The building opened in 2003 with the over 140-year-old stage brought from its previous location in Kikusuiboko-cho, about 2.5 km south of the current site. The Kongo Nohgakudo hosts a variety of Noh-related events, from the Kongo Subscription Noh Series (10 performances each year of representative Noh), utaizome (the first chant of the new year), and performances by candlelight at the Bon Festival, to Noh mask and costume exhibitions.

金剛定期能 Kongo Subscription Noh Series

定期能はその流儀や一門の最もオフィシャルな定例公演です。

金剛定期能では宗家をはじめ金剛流の能楽師が総出演で、年に10回季節に合わせた演目や普段見れない珍しい演目をお送りします。定期会員になると番組の郵送や割引などの会員特典を受ける事ができます。一見すると敷居の高い公演に思えるかもしれませんが、一回ごとの前売券・当日券や学生券もありレパートリーも豊富なので、むしろ初めてのお能鑑賞にもおすすめです。

The Kongo School presents an annual series of showcase performances that are the most representative of the school, called the “Kongo Subscription Noh Series,” just as individual Noh schools and families present their own. In this series of 10 performances, all the Noh actors of the Kongo School, including its head, work together to stage selected Noh plays, some seasonal, others rarely seen. Subscribers to the series are eligible for discounts and receive performance programs in the mail.

The Kongo Subscription Noh Series is quite accessible and recommended for those who have never seen Noh, as well as for Noh enthusiasts. Tickets can also be purchased for individually produced performances, and you can pick and choose from a wide variety of performances. Advance sales, same-day tickets, and student discounts are available.
