Watching Noh
Noh is a performing art that has been gradually transformed in accordance with the currents of the times over a long 700 years of tradition.
However, there are universal things in this world that have never changed.
Why are we born and why do we die?
What is the purpose of the beautiful scenery in front of us?
What on earth should we do with the thoughts that well up in our hearts?
People have been thinking about these things all their lives, and they have lived their own lives. The main theme of Noh is such "human universality.
The "universality of human beings" is also a diversity of personalities, each of whom has his or her own age, nationality, upbringing, gender, etc.
In Noh plays, characters appear with various personalities, including humans, gods, Buddha, spirits, demons, and ghosts, and the stories surrounding the main characters are expressed through a mixture of masks, costumes, music, dance, waka poetry, Chinese poetry, faith, and philosophy.
The characters in the story and the people watching the story are living their own unique lives, so time and time on the stage and in the audience (the audience), world and world, intersect vividly as events that are happening right now. This is the "once in a lifetime" moment that Noh depicts.
In their short lives, people who have been fascinated by Noh have been reminded of the past, experienced the present, and been excited by the future that they have yet to see.
Noh is a "time machine" that has been in use since the Middle Ages.
Kongo-Ryu
What is Kongo-ryu
There are currently five schools of Noh theatre in Japan. In the early Muromachi period (1333-1573), it became one of the four Yamato sarugaku troupes that served Kasuga Taisha Shrine and Kofukuji Temple. Later, it came to be called Kongoza, and led to the present Kongo-ryu.
Kyoto is the current home of the Shite School, and it is the only one of the five Shite Schools whose headmaster resides in the Kansai region.
The art of Noh is known as "Mai Kongo," and is characterized by dynamic movements combined with gorgeous and graceful dances. Also known as Omotekongo, the Noh masks in the museum's collection include many masterpieces.
Kongo Noh Theatre
The current Kongo Noh Theatre was opened in 2003 on the west side of the current Kyoto Imperial Palace (Karasuma-neutral-agaru) after the stage was moved from the former Kongo Noh Theatre, which had been located in Kikusuihoko-cho (Shijo-Muromachi) for over 140 years. Various Noh performances are held here, including "Kongo Regular Noh," a performance of the Kongo school held 10 times a year, "Youtsumae" in the New Year, "Okuribi Noh," and "Noh masks and costumes exhibition.
The Kongo Regular Noh
Regular Noh performances are the most official regular performances of the school or division.
The Kongo Regular Noh Program features performances by the Soke and other Noh performers of the Kongo School, 10 times a year, with programs that match the season and rare performances that are not usually seen. Regular members receive special membership privileges such as discounts and mailings of programs. At first glance, it may seem like an intimidating performance, but advance and same-day tickets for each performance and student tickets are available, and the repertoire is extensive, making it a good choice for first-time Noh theatre-goers as well.
